1/19/22 7th/8th grade: Prophets

*Apologies if the formatting is showing up weird for you. I can't make it go away :-(*

Prophets- In the Old Testament, prophets were appointed by God (often at a very young age) to speak on behalf of God. Prophets informed the kings about what God waned for the people- advice the kings didn’t always follow. There was no official prophet selection process, which often led to some significant skepticism about the credentials of those who claimed to speak for God.

Discussion starters:

- Have you ever had to tell someone something that they did not want to hear?

- Have you ever felt shunned by a community that you thought you were a part of?

- Do you think that God still communicates with people directly or do they communicate in a different way or not at all?

- Do you think God still needs prophets today? If so, what would the job of a prophet look like today?

- Could you be a prophet or are you a prophet in some ways to the people around you?

Bible talk:

- Have a volunteer read Deuteronomy 18:15-22.

Why is it necessary for God to raise up a prophet in this situation?

What does God promise the people about the prophets?

Why would the people be frightened by a false prophet?

- Each prophet spoke to certain groups of people, at certain times, about various situations. Choose several prophets (3-5 of them, look in your table of contents, they go from Isaiah to Malachi) & read their introduction page to get a feel for the circumstances & issues that prophet spoke to. Does a certain theme or circumstance stick out to you? Make a note to read that prophet's entire book.

Walking the Talk

Together choose a phrase that a modern day prophet would say to the world. What message do you think God is trying to get through to people?

Challenge: Post this statement on social media, make it your "bio," your Facebook photo etc.
