11/9/22 7th/8th grade: Mark

7th+8th grade Axis Guide Sheet: The Gospel of Mark

v Large Group (6:30-7:00):

v Small Group time (7:00-7:30)

Takeaway – "Mark rushes into the story of Jesus head-on, excited and passionate about the good news of the Son of God." from colaborate 2015 sparkhouse. There is emphasis on the actions of Jesus that show he is the Son of God.

Key verse – Mark 1:15 – The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.

Discussion starters:

-If you had to convey some important information to your friends or family, how would you make sure they had all the information they needed? In other words, what things would be essential to tell them?

-What helps you believe someone’s story?

-Have you ever had to explain your faith to someone? How did that go?

-What kinds of things do you have a sense of urgency about? In other words, what are the things that you are always wanting to do?

-Mark was actually the first gospel written. In your opinion, does that make it more credible?

-You’ve probably heard the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” What are your thoughts on this? If this is true, what do the things you do say about you? What do Jesus’ actions teach you about Him?

-How does your faith impact or inform your decision making? Or does it at all?

-How does the way you tell a story affect the message?

Further readings to check out: (Have different volunteers read the passages)

-        Things to think/talk about as you read: What does this say to me personally? What questions come to mind? What does this tell me about who God is?

o   The introduction to Mark in their Bibles.

o   Mark 1:14-20

§  Key verse: Mark 1:15. Highlight/underline!

§  What do you think it is about Jesus that made the fishermen follow Him immediately?

§  What’s your favorite thing to do in life? How about one of the most important things you do every day? Would you give either of these up if Jesus asked you to?

o   Mark 8:27-30

§  Why did Jesus ask the disciples “Who do people say that I am?”

§  Why do you think Jesus told them not to talk about His being the Messiah?

§  Who do you say that Jesus is? What does that mean?

Activity Ideas:

Action Bible (counter in the Gear Shed) – What better way to see the Gospel of Mark & all of its action than in the form of a comic book?! (We only have a few, so be aware of that.)

Lights, Camera…Action! – Write a trailer voiceover for the Gospel of Mark.

1-     It must begin with, “In a world…”

2-     You must keep it to 50 words.

3-     If you can, record your group’s trailer!

Stretcher, stat! – Take a look at the story of the paralyzed man & his friends from Mark 2:1-12. Then have your group members take turns carefully carrying one another around. Then talk about this:

-        What is your response when a friend is in trouble/needs help?

-        What about when you see someone you don’t know in need?

-        Why did Jesus declare his sins forgiven first?!

Immediately! – Get ready to run J

-        Quickly lead your group outside & have someone read Mark 1:12-13.

-        Then, head to the kitchen & have another volunteer read Mark 2:15-17

-        Move to the Welcome Center & read Mark 6:41-44

-        Go to the courtyard & read Mark 14:32-34

-        Return to your rooms & read Mark 16:15-20

Be on the Lookout! Take a look around your community this week…Notice where & how other groups show God’s love in your local culture. What admirable things do you notice being done? Talk about them at home & bring an example back next week!

Don’t forget Highs & Lows & to pray!

(you could use this in your prayer)

Ask Jesus to help you to be on the lookout for ways to put your faith into action this week! Then, when you see it, immediately spring into action!
